Your AC uses R-22. Why you probably can’t just replace the condenser

If your outdoor unit has failed and the system runs on R-22, swapping in a modern condenser is not a like-for-like repair. Here is what actually has to change, and why.

This comes up most often in July, when a condenser gives out mid-heatwave and the homeowner is told the repair is not really a repair. If your air conditioner was installed before roughly 2010, there is a good chance it runs on R-22. That changes what happens next.

First: your system is not illegal

There is a lot of alarming language on this subject, so it is worth being precise. On 1 January 2020, the EPA banned the production and import of R-22 in the United States. It did not ban using it.

You are not required to replace an R-22 system. Contractors are not required to rip it out. Servicing R-22 equipment is legal, and a technician with EPA Section 608 certification can still recharge it.

What changed is supply. Every pound of R-22 available today was reclaimed, recycled or stockpiled before the ban. That is why a recharge costs considerably more than it used to, and why the price keeps drifting upward as the remaining supply shrinks.

So the real question is not whether you are allowed to keep the system. It is whether keeping it makes financial sense.

The part that surprises people

When a condenser fails, the intuitive fix is to replace the condenser. On an R-22 system that usually cannot be done as a standalone job. Understanding why is the difference between spotting a quote you should be suspicious of and recognizing an honest one.

Modern equipment does not run R-22. Replacement units have run R-410A for years, and now increasingly A2L refrigerants. Those are not interchangeable with R-22, for three separate reasons. Any one of them would be enough on its own.

1. The pressures are far higher

R-410A operates at roughly 50 to 60 percent higher pressure than R-22 under comparable conditions. The compressor, coil and fittings in an R-22 system were never designed for that. Forcing a higher-pressure refrigerant through hardware rated for a lower one risks rupture and compressor failure. This is a safety limit, not a performance preference.

2. The oils are incompatible

R-22 systems use mineral oil. R-410A requires POE (polyol ester) oil. Mineral oil does not dissolve evenly in R-410A in either the liquid or vapor phase, so oil stops making its way back to the compressor. A compressor slowly starved of lubricant fails early, and residual mineral oil left behind in the lines is enough to cause it.

3. The indoor coil is matched to a refrigerant

Indoor evaporator coils are sized and rated for a specific refrigerant. Put a new condenser outside and leave an R-22 coil inside, and you get poor capacity, poor efficiency and a high failure rate. Efficiency ratings only hold for matched systems, so a mismatched pair is not really rated at all.

What that means in practice

A proper changeover generally means the outdoor unit, the indoor coil and the metering device. It often means attention to the line set as well, since residual oil is the problem. At that point you have replaced essentially the whole system, which is why an honest contractor quotes it that way rather than as a condenser swap.

If someone offers to bolt a modern condenser onto your existing R-22 indoor equipment and leave it there, get another quote.

What you would be replacing it with in 2026

This part has moved recently, so it is worth stating carefully.

Under the AIM Act, R-410A can no longer be manufactured or imported for new residential air conditioners and heat pumps as of 1 January 2025. New equipment now uses A2L refrigerants, most commonly R-454B in ducted systems and R-32 in many ductless ones. Both have far lower global warming potential than R-410A. A2L means mildly flammable, with a very low burning velocity. It changes some installation and handling requirements, which is a matter for your contractor rather than for you.

There was also going to be a ban on installing higher-GWP systems from 1 January 2026. That deadline was removed. In May 2026 the EPA finalized a change allowing equipment manufactured or imported before 1 January 2025 to continue being installed until existing stock runs out.

One caveat worth knowing: state rules can be stricter than the federal ones, and some states kept their own bans in place. California has its own refrigerant regulations under CARB, and how those interact with the federal change is exactly the kind of thing that shifts. Ask your contractor what applies in Riverside County today rather than relying on an article, including this one.

Repair or replace?

There is no universal answer. These are the questions that actually decide it.

  • What failed? A capacitor or contactor is a genuine repair at almost any age. A failed compressor on an old R-22 system rarely is.
  • How often has it been recharged? Refrigerant does not get used up. If it needed topping up again, you have a leak, and you are paying reclaimed-R-22 prices to fill a system that will empty again.
  • How old is it? Much of Murrieta was built through the boom years of the late 1990s and 2000s. A lot of original equipment here is now fifteen to twenty-five years old, which is the end of a normal service life for a unit working through Inland Valley summers.
  • What does the repair cost against replacement? Spending heavily on a system that is near end-of-life, still leaking, and running a refrigerant that only gets scarcer is usually money spent twice.

Questions worth asking a contractor

  • What refrigerant is my system actually charged with?
  • Did you find the leak, or only measure that the charge is low?
  • If we replace the outdoor unit, what happens to the indoor coil and the line set?
  • Is the replacement a matched system, and can I see the pairing?
  • What refrigerant does the new equipment use, and what does that mean for servicing it later?

A good answer to those is a decent proxy for a good contractor.

If you are in this position now

Get it properly diagnosed before deciding anything. "It needs a recharge" is not a diagnosis. The useful information is where the refrigerant is going and what the rest of the system looks like.
